Associates are selected to join the Louisiana Law Review through a writing competition held each summer. Students who wish to be considered write short, anonymous papers on an assigned topic from a closed research packet. In making selections, the Editors consider the quality of the students' papers, the students' GPAs, and the production needs of the Review.
Junior Associates fulfill their production duties by performing citechecking assignments on articles slated for publication by the Review. Citations are checked for both substance and form. Additionally, all Junior Associates are required to write a casenote or comment of publishable quality. Some of these student papers are slated for publication in the next year's Review.
After the first year, associates may either join the Editorial Board of the Law Review, or fulfill Senior Associate production duties. The members of the new Editorial Board are selected from a pool of Junior Associate applicants by the outgoing Board. In making its selections, the Board considers the applicant's letter of intent, résumé, and performance on the Review. Production duties of Senior Associates include creating a topical index for each volume of the Review, and leading Junior Associate citechecking groups.
